The Man in her Life

It felt weird, a strange tingling inside as she put the phone down. Unable to concentrate on her second novel, (her first, a rip-roaring Sci-Fi novel was a raging success), Sonia decided to spend a little time on her garden, just to calm her nerves.

The tomatoes and watermelons she'd planted, were doing well, as she managed to boost up her Gardening skills considerably. She'd even tried her hand at Fishing too, catching a couple of fine fish for her pot (and bringing in some fine fare for the supermarket).

She was so engrossed in what she was doing, that she didn't hear the car pull up. A soft cough brought her to her senses and she turned, in time to see him standing there, soft red hair, chocolate brown eyes ... and a folorn expression on his face.

"Hi," she said, shaking the dirt from her grubby hands.

"Hi," came the reply.

Well.... this felt.... awkward.

Being single and keeping mainly to herself, she'd never had time for kids.
And now, she'd adopted one.

This cute-as-a-button, red-headed little boy, standing before her, was what Social Services had chosen as her son.

"What's your name?" she asked, looking down at him, hoping to see a smile on that glum face.

"Andrew," he replied, offering her a tentative smile.

That did it.
From that moment onwards, she vowed to give this kid a happy and welcome home.

Quite out character, and because she really felt for this lonesome little boy, Sonia decided to break the ice by pulling a funny face at him.

It worked!

He couldn't resist pulling one back.

And that's when she knew, her life would never be the same, ever again.
